Lest we forget - DS Raymond William Purdy
DS Raymond William Purdy was murdered on 13 July 1959 in the execution of his duty. We will never forget.
Gunter Fritz Erwin Podola was a German national who arrived in Britain in 1959 having been deported from Canada following convctions there for theft and burglary. On 13th July 1959 he had tried to blackmail one of his burglary victims in South Kensington, stating that he had compromising photographs of her. Knowing that he did not, the victim contacted the police who tapped her line and were able to trace her blackmailed to a telephone box in South Kensington. He was arrested by DS Raymond William Purdy assisted by DC John Stanford. Whilst DC Stanford went to get the police car, Podola produced a 9mm automatic pistol and shot DS Purdy. He escaped on foot. He was traced and arrested, eventaully being hanged for the murder on 5th November. He was the last person to die for the murder of a police officer in Britain.
DS Purdy was 43 years old and had been in the job for almost 20 years. May he rest in peace.
