Capital facing "lesser police service" due to budget cuts

"The only thing you will get with 1,700 fewer police officers, staff and PCSOs is a lesser London police service for the public."

Metropolitan Police Federation Statement following an announcement the Met will need to make sweeping cuts to deal with a £260m hole in its budget.

Matt Cane, General Secretary of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said: "Police Officers across London are stretched to the limit - rushing from job to job as they do their very best to keep people safe.

"Any cuts to policing - despite the Mayor's funding announcement - will only make this dire situation much, much worse."

Matt added: "The only thing you will get with 1,700 fewer police officers, staff and PCSOs is a lesser London police service for the public. As we have said time and time again cuts really do have consequences

"Fewer police officers on the streets will clearly have a significant impact on the Metropolitan Police's ability to effectively police London but also on our already over burdened members.

"They deserve better - and proper support from the country's politicians when it comes to funding the force and also their pay and conditions.

"If we don't properly pay the police officers we have, then more will leave. Making what is looking like a terrible situation even worse."
