We have had a number of enquiries about this year’s Police Pay Award. Understandably this is something that is very important to our members who are struggling to manage their bills.
Police Pay is always uprated on September 1st each year and our pay year is 1st September to 30th August every year
Some other public sector workers have their pay uprated on 1st April each year to coincide with the financial year but not all.
This can cause some confusion when public sector pay rises are announced and the media talk about backdated pay.
A public sector worker whose pay year is 1st April to 31st March will have their pay backdated to 1st April.
Police officers have their pay rises backdated to the 1st September each year.
The pay award for 2022 of £1,900 per annum (about £158.33 per month) before tax and national insurance came into effect on 1st September 2022. London Weighting increased by 5% to £2696.40 again from September 1st 2022 and again subject to tax and NI.
The pay award for 2023 will come into effect from 1st September 2023. Both the annual basic rate of pay and London Weighting will rise by 7% as will Dog Handlers Allowance.
In addition to the national pay award, the Met Federation lobbied hard for our officers to get an additional rise.
The Commissioner agreed and we are pleased to announce that Met officers will also receive an additional £1,000
We are in working through how this will be paid by the Met but we anticipate that officers who joined post September 1st 1994 will be paid through an increase to London Allowance 2
For officers who joined pre 1994, the £1,000 we anticipate it will be paid in the form of a Targeted Variable Payment
Both of these will be paid on a monthly basis.
